Buzzwords - Corporate

Today's business world is awash in overused buzzwords. Many think these terms make them appear "in the loop" and well-read. But while the temptation is great to use these words and phrases as shortcuts, they have become the subject of jokes. Below are some common examples in business today: 

News snackers are people with short attention spans who primarily get their news in short bursts from things like Twitter, RSS feeds, and mobile phones.

An urban Amish is a city dweller with no cell phone, no laptop, no iPod, no Blackberry, etc.

Oblication is vacation time spent managing personal obligations, such as taking time off from work to move house or meet the electrician, etc.

OT-mail: An unnecessary, after-hours e-mail sent to a supervisor or co-workers with the sole purpose of time-stamping how late you worked.

Leveraging knowledge capital: Stealing someone else's work or idea and then changing a few things to make it your own.

Telephonically communicated: To convey information or data by telephone. "The results of the retest were telephonically communicated to the CEO." A less buzzy alternative: "I called Jack."

Buzzword - Nailing Jell-O® to a tree

This would normally indicate something either impossible or pointless. (jello for US = jelly for UK = gelatine substance).

"Trying to make the new colleague understand was like trying to nail Jell-O^®  to a tree".

Buzzword - Herding cats

If you have to try to co-ordinate a very difficult situation, where people want to do very different things, you are herding cats.
“The latest project that I'm managing at work involves so many different groups that it's just like herding cats.”

Buzzword - Blue-sky thinking

Ways of thinking about a subject or dealing with a problem that are new and original but may not always be practical:

“What we need at the moment is specialist knowledge and implementation rather than blue-sky thinking.”

Buzzword - Analysis paralysis

The condition of being unable to make a decision due to the availability of too much information which must be processed in order for the decision to be made.

“Did management ever decide if we were going to get extra machinery for the warehouse? They spent $2,000 on a cost analysis, accounting is still crunching cost figures and they have been discussing it for 9 months. It is in the company's usual state of total analysis paralysis.”

Buzzword - Backward compatible

Backward compatible  

refers to a hardware or software system that can use the interface of an older version of the same product. A new standard product or model is considered backward compatible when it is able to read, write or view older formats. ." Contrast with forward compatible 

“Did you know that the PlayStation 2 is somewhat backwards compatible with the PlayStation 1? I can play my old Playstation 1 games on my new PlayStation 2.

Buzzword - Buzz-whacker

buzz.whack.er (buz´wak er) n. A person who receives some degree of pleasure in bursting the bubbles of the pompous.
